SOAPNet and The Reality TV World
Tonight SOAPNet will debut a new reality TV show, Greg Behrendt’s Wake Up Call at 10PM EST. Greg Behrendt is the guy who wrote the mega hit book, now movie, He’s Just Not That Into You. Apparently Greg is going to help couples whose relationship is in serious trouble. At the end of each hour the troubled couple will decide if Greg was able to help them stay together or if Greg helped them realize they are better off apart. It is basically a couple’s therapy session on TV.
Whatever to each his own I don’t really have an opinion about the show because honestly I have no intentions of watching it. And I have a very good reason for why I am not watching it. I don’t think that a network that is suppose to be completely devoted to Soap Opera’s should be airing reality shows. I am an avid fan of both Soap Opera’s, SOAPNet and Reality TV, I want to make that clear before I continue on with this blog. Now on to my opinion, I feel that with Soap Opera’s stuggling the way they are that when a network devoted to them looks for other programming it is just wrong. I get that this reality show has a Sooapesque quality to it, but it is not a Soap Opera. SOAPNet needs to take a good hard look at why the network was started in the first place and get back to the core of the network. By airing Greg’s show at 10PM SOAPNet is preempiting today’s episode of General Hospital. Now as a General Hospital fan that does not make me happy. I like knowing I can watch that show at 10PM EST if I need to. I get that SOAPNet is probably looking for a way to bring in ratings which will in turn bring in advertisers, and doing a reality TV show is a good way to achieve that goal. The problem with that is it hurts what is the core of SOAPNet, Soaps. What can I say I just have serious issues with the whole thing which is why I can’t bring myself to watch Greg Behrendt’s Wake Up Call. However I am interested in hearing what any of my faithful readers thing of this show, so let me know.
