The Biggest Loser Finale: Inspiring

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

The finale of NBC’s third season of “The Biggest Loser” aired last night. I watched because that show inspires me like few others do. I love seeing people go on that show and, motivated by a deep desire to change their lives, do just that. And last night’s show was no different. We got to check in with the “at home players” and see how they’d done with their weight loss. Some, I could tell, had fallen off the wagon, so to speak. But others… wow. Poppi, for one, lost an amazing 117 pounds, 50.43% of her starting weight of 232 pounds. She went from a size 22 to a size 2, people. That’s just incredible. Some of the contestants I didn’t even recognize, the change was so drastic.

The winner of the $250,000 Jell-O Grand Prize (my husband and I would giggle each time Caroline Rae would say Jell-O Grand Prize) was Erik Chopin, a deli owner from New York. I knew when they first revealed him that he would win because he looked INCREDIBLE. He started out at 407 pounds and was desperately unhealthy. Last night, he weighed in at 193 pounds. He lost 214 pounds, a percentage of 52.58%. I don’t care who you are, that’s just amazing. He looked like a completely different person. I was truly happy and excited for him and his family. He won a lot more than just $250,000. He won a new, healthier life. I get chills right now just thinking about it.

The other Final Four members weren’t too shabby either. Heather Hansen, however, was not able to weigh in at the finale. Why? She was five months pregnant! Apparently she got pregnant shortly after returning home and was unable to continue with the weight-loss competition, for obvious reasons. She was awarded with a stylish nursery for her good fortune, however, so she didn’t have to go home empty handed. Wylie, from Miami Beach, Florida, finished third and received $25,000. He started out at 307 pounds and lost 129 pounds, a percentage of 42.02%. He looked pretty darned good, too. No more being afraid to take off his shirt on the beach for him! Kai, from Eagle River, Alaska, also had an amazing result. She came in second with $50,000 and having started out at 262 pounds, she lost 118 pounds which is a percentage of 45.04%. You go girl! She looked sleek, tanned and amazing at the finale in a beautiful black dress. She also set a record for “The Biggest Loser” as the most weight lost by a female contestant. If that doesn’t inspire you, I don’t know what will.

The results of this show are amazing. It’s incredible to see so many people make such drastic changes in their life, for the better. There are few reality shows that I would actually want to be a part of. “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” for obvious reasons (hey, I wouldn’t mind a whirlpool tub, ya know), “Amazing Race” for the challenge and “The Biggest Loser” for the opportunity.
