Dancing with the Stars

“Dancing with the Stars” - Week 3 Competition

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Wayne NewtonRemember last week?  How bad Wayne sucked?  And then Albert was the one voted out?  Yeah, that sorta sucked.  So we’ll see how bad Wayne is tonight and if his fans can honestly bring themselves to vote for him yet again.

Oh geeze.  Wayne has a ’stache this week.  AND A PONYTAIL.  Save me.  Good to see Jane back, though what’s with her HAIR?  That better be a wig.   What’s with the hair??  Are these people on dope?

Sabrina and Mark are up first this week, dancing the jive.  So I’m pretty sure Sabrina is gonna mop up the floor with it.  We get started with some impressive gymnastics from Mark and the dance as a whole is cute and fun to watch.  As usual.  It’s a fantastic dance, just nothing bad to say about it.  Of course, I’m not a judge.  Len didn’t like some of the strange, modern moves but he liked it over all, called it their best dance so far.  Bruno is enthusiastic in his response, of course, and loved it.  Carrie Ann thought the dance completely suited her.  Scores?  9, 9 and 9 for a total of 27.  Great score.

Cameron and Edyta are up next, dancing the Tango.  Hmm!  He promises that this will be his dance.  He comes to the floor literally looking like Clark Kent, glasses and all.  As for the dance, I’m literally distracted by Edyta.  She’s just stunning and I mean that.  And I’m a GIRL, so you know the men have to love it.  But I think he did pretty good.  It was fun to watch.  Carrie Ann says she’s surprised, she didn’t think it wasn’t too passionate.  But she liked it otherwise.  Len thought it lacked the tango character.  Bruno, who can’t help but interrupt, thought it was fabulous.   Scores?  8, 7 and 8 for a total of 23 which is pretty nice.  I hope they return next week.

Mark and Kym take the dance floor, dancing the jive.  Apparently, the jive hurts Mark.  To me this says that we’ll see another wooden Mark this week.  It certainly doesn’t compare to Sabrina’s jive, but it’s not so bad.  I just don’t find him charismatic at all.  But yeah, I think he’s pretty stiff for a dance that requires some looseness.   Bruno thought he was dancing better, but needs to be lighter.  Carrie Ann thinks he needs to not dance as much with this face (ha!).  Len thought the choreography was good but that the timing was poor.  Scores?  6, 7, and 7 for a total of 20.  Appropriate.

Jennie and Derek are up dancing the tango, trying to recover from last week’s quick step fall fiasco.  Jennie is very hard on herself about it and Derek is hoping to move her past that.  It’s definitely an angry dance, I’ll give it that.  I don’t know if it’s passionate.  I think I may have liked Cameron’s tango better.  But really, she does a very good job.  Len thought it was sharp and tangy like a pickle.  Carrie Ann gives Jennie a high five and thought it was very well done.  Bruno called it the call back of the season.  So shows what I know.  Scores? 9, 8 and 9 for a total of 26.  Wow.  Wasn’t expecting that.

Mel B and Maksim are up with the jive.  It’s pretty good, actually.  I think this dance plays to a lot of Mel’s strengths.  She’s able to incorporate a lot of her natural athleticism (and that’s not a joke about Sporty Spice, believe it or not) (anyhow, Mel was Scary Spice, not Sporty Spice) (why was she Scary Spice anyhow?  She’s not scary at all!).  Bruno says she was excitement on legs.  Len says the B is for “bounce” and it was her best dance.  Carrie Ann agrees with the other guys.  Scores?  9, 9 and 9 for 27 and a tie with Sabrina and Mark.

Wayne and Cheryl are next doing the tango.  Wayne came close to getting cut (WHY wasn’t he cut??  Damn yous!) and it humbled him (something has to).  Wayne sees a lot of the cowboy in the tango.  I’m going WHAT?  They’re dancing to traditional tango music, so there’s that.  Wayne pretty much looks like a coat rack next to Cheryl.  It’s bad, ya’ll.  Just take my word for it.  He HAS to be gone this week.  Carrie Ann loves his look (what??), but thought Cheryl was leading him a lot (ya think?).  Bruno thinks Wayne has to take over.  Len thought the dance disappeared.  Scores?  6, 6, and 6 for a total of 18.  I think that’s kind, considering.

Floyd and Karina dance next doing the jive.  He’s determined to act more like a dancer than a boxer and even has a riff on that in the beginning with a jump rope.  I think he does great, to be honest.  It’s fun, bouncy and sexy all at once.  The man is definitely good on his feet, I’ll give him that.  Len says it was fun and energetic.  Carrie Ann thought it needed more structure.  Bruno thought he had a ton of potential and that needs to apply it.  Scores?  7, 7 and 7 for a total of 21.  Fair.

Jane and Tony are next with a saucy tango.  We hear and see Jane’s reaction to learning about her mother’s death after the last performance show.  She used the passion from her feelings about her mother and channeled them into her tango.  The dance is dedicated to her.  You go Jane!  As for the dance?  It was very deliberate and very structured and very well done.  Bruno says her dance was worthy of a silent movie queen.  Len says it could have been on pay per view (eh?).  Carrie Ann says she witness a very special moment (near tears, even!).  Scores?  9, 9 and 9 for a total of 27.  Very good show.

Helio and Julianne are next with a jive and hopes are high that he’ll do well yet again.  He hurt his ankle trying to do a jump, so hopefully that won’t cause too many troubles.  The dance is pretty good, I thought.  I mean, they seem to hit all the moves and Helio had charm and charisma as always.  Carrie Ann thought his fun was contagious.  Bruno didn’t think tonight that he was quite “on it” tonight.  Len thought he gave a good performance.   Scores?  8, 8, and 8 for a total of 24.  A decent score, but not at the top of the pack as they usually are.

Lastly we have Marie and Jonathon dancing the tango.  They have a lot to live up to after last week’s fabulous dance.  Jonathon tells Marie she’s the queen of drama, which causes my eyebrow to raise just a hair.  If I have one complaint about Marie’s look so far this season it’s that she looks excessively matronly.  Their tango, however, is pretty decent.  Marie does it well, the acting portion of the dance.  Her disinterest is charming.  They have a splashy finish too, which helps.   Len says it was absolutely elegant.  Carrie Ann says it worked completely.  Bruno says she’s the mistress of characters, absolutely right.  Scores?  9, 8 and 9 for a total of 26.  Very good.

Wow, we had some good scores tonight!  But I think it’s obvious who needs to go.  BYE WAYNE!

Albert goes bye-bye on DWTS

Albert Reed on DWTS

Believe me, ya’ll, I’m as surprised as you are.  And apparently as surprised as he is too.  I’m sorry I didn’t recap Tuesday night’s elimination episode, but my DVR was a busy machine that night and an hour of fluff was the first thing to go by the wayside.  Imagine my surprise when I found out that Albert had been the one booted, and not Wayne (or even Mark!).

If you’ll recall from Monday night’s episode,  both Wayne and Mark did dismally with the judges while Albert was somewhere in the pack of 21-scored competitors.  He wasn’t great on Monday, but he wasn’t awful either.  And he had charisma.  So what’s the dealio?  Why Albert?

I’m guessing the votes just didn’t come in for him, which is a shame.  I knew Wayne’s fan base might be formidable, which is why I considered Mark a backup for elimination.   I guess if anything, this shows why you should never assume anything with this show and if you care at all, you need to get your votes in on time.

In other news from Tuesday night’s show, Jane Seymour wasn’t in attendance, as she was flying to England to attend her mother’s funeral.  Her mother had passed away the day before (I think?).  Jane plans to continue on with the show, since it was her mother’s wish that she compete in the show at all (she was a big fan of the British version).  I’m not sure how Jane will be getting her practice in this week with the traveling, but considering she wants to dedicate her performance to her mother, I’m sure she’ll be working hard.

Also, to the surprise of none, Helio and Sabrina are the top two competitors in this show and they are the ones to beat.  It’s entirely expected that they’ll be the final two.  Honestly, I’d be surprised if that wasn’t the case.

“Dancing with the Stars”: Week 2 performances

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

DWTS JudgesSo we’re having stars going head to head tonight, and thank goodness because I don’t think my DVR could take it if we had separate performance nights again this week.  Before I get ahead of myself… recaps!

Now, onto the goodies.  Last week we lost Josie.  Aww.  At least Marie’s dress is better this week.  We’ll see if her dancing is too (I doubt it).  Also: Could Kym be wearing any less fabric?  Kinda digging the risque nature of Jane Seymour’s dress though (top half, not bottom, bottom is sort of a trainwreck).  Man, I say if you’ve got it, you flaunt it girl!

We start right off with Mel B and Maksim doing the quick step.  She and Maks have good rapport.  There’s chemistry there, because I’m not entirely sure they even like each other.  Or maybe this is just how they work together.  Anyhow, this is a more classically ballroom style dance so we’ll see.  Her dress is understated, the music is strange (Aha? Really?)  But you know, I thought she did pretty good.  It was kind of fun to watch.  She looks like she’s having fun.  The judges really seemed to like it too, so I guess I’m not just seeing things.  (Does Marilyn actually know what she’s talking about??)  The scores?  7, 8 and 8 for a total of 23.

Next up: Mark and Kym (in her skimpy dress).  They’re doing the mambo.  Once I stop being distracted by her dress (was that the idea?) I notice that Mark is lax at best.  I mean, she’s doing an excellent job, but he seems lackluster.  He’s trying to keep it exciting, bless him, but it’s just not working.  I don’t really see him moving a whole lot, you know?  What do the judges say?  They try to be diplomatic, but basically, he sucked.  All the judges praised his obvious hard work, but it just wasn’t enough.  “It was like watching a bulldog chasing a squirrel.”  Indeed!  The scores?   6, 6, and 6 for a total of 18.  Deserved.

We’re back from commercial with Wayne and Cheryl doing the quick step. Cheryl’s costume is nothing less than ACK.  The song?  Viva Las Vegas.  Oh yes.  My verdict: NO.  Just… no.  He’s very stiff.  He’s got charm, I’ll give him that.  You want him to do well.  But… no.  Do the judges agree with me?  Pretty much.  I feel vindicated.   Scores? 5, 5, and 5.  YOW.  That’s a 15.  Deserved.

To round out the heinous dancers, we have Marie and Jonathon doing the mambo.   I’m cringing ahead of time here.   Like I said, Marie’s dress is better.  How’s the dancing this week?  MUCH BETTER.  Especially considering she’s coming after Wayne Newton here.  I mean, it’s not show stopping, but it’s decent.  Donny is cheering is fool head off in the audience.  (And I couldn’t get over the music being the same music from the intro to the movie “Office Space”.  You know, where they’re stuck in traffic?)  The judges gave her some caveats, but overall told her she did real good.  I agree.  Scores?  8, 8 and 8 for a total of 24.  Highest score so far tonight!

Up next we have Albert and Anna who I’m enjoying quite a bit this season.  They’re dancing the quick step and Albert is doing the show (and dedicating this dance) to his grandfather who was a ballroom dancer himself.   He seems to almost have an awkward start, I can’t put my finger on exactly what is wrong.  The song and the dance are mismatched, for one.  I don’t know.  I don’t think the judges are going to dig it.  Actually, they sort of liked it.  They give him some really good constructive criticism, actually.  Len called him a “dark horse” in the competition.  We’ll see what the scores say.  Scores?  7, 7, and 7 for a total of 21.  Better than I expected, but I’m happy with them.

Dancing the mambo we’ve got Helio and Julianne.  Wow, he’s just got charm and talent doesn’t he?  Yeah, I’d say he’s definitely a front-runner in this competition. Yeah, this is a good dance, at least from my perspective.  He had energy where Mark had NONE.  And the judges?  Total agreement.  Bruno likened him to a professional dancer.  Everyone practically slobbered over him, he was THAT GOOD.  Scores?  9, 9 and 9 for a total of 27.  NICE.

Jennie and Derek are next dancing the quick step.  Is it just me or does she not look like she did on “Beverly Hills, 90210″?  She must have had some work done or something.  Or maybe it’s just age.  She looks good though.  Wow, she dances pretty well too.  Ballroom is her thing, apparently.  I think she’s got grace down.  There was a pretty good flub at the end, but I don’t think it was her fault.  The judges liked it pretty well, thought maybe it got a little shaky in the middle, but saw potential there.  Scores?  7, 7 and 7 for a total of 21.  Not shabby, considering.

Up next week have Cameron and Edyta (wow, racy costume there!) dancing the mambo.  Cameron’s feeling the pressure of his schedule and the dancing.  I want him to do well.  So that’s not really a dress, just so you know.  It’s a bikini with scraps of fabric attached to it.  The dancing?  H e does pretty well, actually, for all his fretting.  He’s no Helio, but he’s not bad either.  What do the judges think?  He needs to get into the music and feel the rhythm, but overall did pretty well.  Scores?  7, 7, and 7 for a total of 21.  We’re seeing that a lot tonight, aren’t we?

Next we have Floyd and Karina doing the quick step.  Call me crazy but I think he’s going to bite the big one on this.  Poor Floyd.  He tries hard.   The music is good for the dance.  And you know, he’s better than I expected he would be.  He could be smiling more, but the rhythm is down.  Plus, the footwork is right on.  As Kile (my husband) pointed out, that’s what boxers do, so it makes sense.  The judges liked it. Needs to work on posture, but he worked it.  Len said he looked like he was guarding against a left hook.  Indeed!  Scores?  7, 7 and 7 for a total of 21 (again).  I actually expected higher.

Dancing next are Jane and Tony dancing the mambo.  Will Jane’s hips twist?  Will the snake teach her how to mambo?  Will the latin dance make her crumble?  She could be moving more, I think, her hips DO need to get the hint.  But it’s not bad.  Definitely not as natural to her as ballroom, but she’s doing well enough, I think considering it’s such a challenge for her.  What do the judges say?  They pretty much agreed with me.  Len called it an “English Mambo” and I kinda agree.  It wasn’t raunchy enough.  Carrie Ann liked it, thought the elegance worked in this mambo, she was playing to her strengths.  Scores?  7, 7 and 7 for ANOTHER 21.  Sheesh.  Five people with that score.

Lastly, we have Sabrina and Mark dancing the quick step.  Will she be able to cut ballroom?  Oh, and no more hip hop moves in any of her dances.  She struggles with the posture (as have most of the celebrities tonight) in practice.  Does she have it?  It’s definitely quick.  And the little leaps seem to be right on.  She’s definitely got charisma.  She’s got energy.  Both are very good for this dance.  And not a trace of hip hop.  Pretty dang good!  Do the judges agree?   Yep.  They do.  Len cautions her against too much speed (which causes him to lash out at Bruno for being a smart ass).  Scores?  9, 8 and 9 for another 26 (matching their score last week).

WHEW.  So voting is only open for like 30 minutes, so by the time you read this, it’s too late.  OOPS.  So who are you rooting for?

“Dancing with the Stars”: Elimination #1

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Sabrina and MarkFirst up, we’ve got some recaps for you!

So yeah.  I missed last night’s show.  I just haven’t had time to watch it, and chose to watch “Biggest Loser” live instead.  So after tonight’s show, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to watch last night’s show, right?  Anyhow, the skinny is that the men to beat are Cameron Mathison (who I’m sort of rooting for) Albert and Helio.  And the one who got beat is Floyd.  Poor Floyd.  Mark wasn’t so hot either but he was charming with the judges which counted for something.

The judges really enjoyed Sabrina and Mark and invited them to reprise their now famous Cha Cha Cha.   Which, yeah, it’s really good.  Fun to watch and she looks like she’s having a great time.  I’ll be interested to see how she handles a ballroom dance.  She’s got the energy down for the latin dances, but how about grace for the waltz?  We’ll see.

The first couple definitely going onto the next round are, surprise surprise, Sabrina and Mark.  Second are Jennie and Derek.  Wee!  The women are doing well, aren’t they?  Still, we’ve got Josie who got an abysmal 16 points.   After the break we are treated to Dolly Parton singing “9 to 5″ and some of the professional dancers doing a little routine to it.  Dang, Dolly’s still got it.  And I’m not just talking about the singing here.  Yowza.

So who is safe next? Drew chats up the men backstage before Tom reveals the next safe bunch.  First off, we have Helio and Julianne.  Duh.  Secondly we have Albert and Ana (and I’m so happy, cuz he’s pretty hot).   Sabrina admits to being nervous about trying ballroom dancing, she wants to go right home and start working on it.  Albert promises to “keep is sassy”.  Yes please.   Now we get to watch famous tap dancer Sabien Glover do his thing.  And he’s pretty good.  Makes my feet hurt to watch him.

Aaaaand… another performance from Dolly Parton.  This one is off her new record and is not accompanied by any dancers.  This is followed by some fluffy filler about the “origins of dance”.  Cute though, and it keeps us distracted.  However, the inclusion of one of the Geico cavemen was pretty stupid.  Dude, that little fad is SO over.  Ahem.  Anyhow.  Next saved are Mel and Maksim and Cameron and Edyta.  Wee!

(more commercials)

We get to see a bunch of clips along with commentary from the judges about just how hard these celebrities have been working.  Or how hard they HAVEN’T been working, as the case may be.  Len may have jinxed things about talking about how important the judges decision is, how they influence what America thinks.  Mmm… sure about that?  I mean, I think it’s true, to an extent.  But let’s not go nuts here, either.

Jane and Tony are safe, THANK GOD.  I was worried.  Wayne and Cheryl?  Also safe (he’s got some DIE HARD fans, ya’ll).  Marie looks about 60 right here.  Marie and Jonathon are safe and I throw up in my mouth a little.  Josie had the lowest judging and voting scores from Monday night.  Not a big surprise.  Floyd and Karina are safe, despite him having the lowest judges score.  Mark and Kym have the lowest combined total from Tuesday night.  So who is going home?  Dun dun DUN!  (after the commercial!)

So we’re back and who is it?  To the surprise of NO ONE, it’s Josie and Alec.  I kinda feel bad for Alec.  Mark looks relieved but still worried.  I just don’t think the audience really knows or cares about who he is.  Josie has a little snarky comment for the judges, which you know, she had a right to.  I think Marie was worse.  (It’s the dress!)  Anyhow, that’s enough dancing for one week.  Tomorrow?  “Survivor”!

“Dancing with the Stars” premieres

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Mel B and MaksimI missed the first half of this, so I’m not going to do my “Big Brother” style recap for this episode, unfortunately. I will give you a list of recap sites so you can catch up if you missed out (like I did! *sheepish look*). And I’ll give you my impressions from where I picked up.

When I picked up, the “Cheetah Girl” had just finished dancing and was getting her scores. So I go to see Marie Osmond’s intro and performance. While I kind of enjoyed her energy, her dancing I did not. Nor did I enjoy her dress. The slit in the side I found very distracting and I was constantly afraid I’d end up accidentally seeing something I didn’t want to. I thought the judges were AWFULLY kind when they spoke to her, but luckily their scores reflected (mostly) her performance. They were 7, 7, and 7 for a total of 21.

Next, was Mel B, of “Spice Girls” fame. She’s a card, that one. I could see where her personality would get annoying, but so far I’m enjoying her. And her performance was a LOT of fun and I really dug her dress. I missed what her scores were because my husband was delivering to me a peach crisp for desert at the time (and who wouldn’t be distracted by peach crisp?).

Jane Seymour and TonyAfter the break, we get to see Jane Seymour. I adore her. I used to be a big “Dr. Quinn” fan so I’d like to see her do well. She’s very excited to be on the show and I think she has some great potential. Her dress…. eh. Not so much. It’s a little PINK and the length is pretty long but it’s still a lot better than Marie’s. Her dancing, however, seems awesome. Not terribly energetic, but the foxtrot doesn’t seem to call for much energy. The judges had some pretty nice things to say too, very elegant and beautiful. Watch the turns. Their scores? 8, 8, and 8 for a total of 24. Not shabby.

So that sums up the women. Tomorrow, we see the men. Who am I most interested in? Cameron Mathison because I used to be a big “All My Children” fan, at least until they killed off Dixie. I’m also interested to see Wayne Newton. The Indy car racer totally makes me think of Sascha Baron Cohen’s character from “Talladega Nights”. Don’t you think? Anyhow. Vote now for your favorites.  Sabrina is in first with 26 points, with Mel B and Jane in second with 24 points.  Apparently Josie stunk up the joint and got 16 points.  My husband (who saw her perform) says she did MUCH better than Marie Osmond.  So we’ll see.  Anyhow, that’s it from me, later taters!

“Dancing with the Stars” announces new cast

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Wayne Newton“Dancing with the Stars” premieres on September 24, and ABC has finally announced the celebrity cast that we can expect to see waltz across our living room televisions. Actually, host Tom Bergeron, judge Carrie Ann Inaba and winner Apollo Anton Ohno spilled the beans on “Good Morning America” the other day. It’s an interesting lineup, with some surprises as far as I’m concerned. Shoot, I may just go ahead and watch this year.

  • Wayne Newton (if you don’t know who he is, I can’t help you)
  • Marie Osmond (again, if you don’t know then you’ve got bigger problems)
  • Jennie Garth (of former “Beverly Hills, 90210″ fame)
  • Sabrina Bryan (a Disney “Cheetah Girl”)
  • Melanie Brown (formerly known as “Scary Spice”)
  • Jane Seymour (anyone remember “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman”?)
  • Hélio Castroneves (two time Indy 500 champion)
  • Mark Cuban (dot com billionaire and Dallas Mavericks owner)
  • Floyd Mayweather Jr. (pro boxer)
  • Cameron Mathison (soap opera star)
  • Josie Maran (Sports Illustrated swimsuit model)
  • Albert Reed (ex-surfer and Abercrombie and Fitch model)

And there you have it. I think there’s some interesting people on that list and I’ll be interested to see what they can do.

Random Reality

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Watching Reality TVThere’s a little bit of everything today, so let’s get started:

  • Notice the super-cool, completely professional (snort) looking masthead up top!  451Press has now implemented the option to use customized mastheads for the blogs and I think it’s a fabulous idea.  Expect that this one will change periodically as my mood strikes.  Do you like it?
  • Remember when I mentioned that “On the Lot”’s ratings were up last week after having an abysmal rating of 2.9 million viewers the week before?  Well this week, they were back to 2.9 million viewers again.  Variety even reported that “On the Lot” was dragging down ratings for “House” which airs directly afterwards but still has about double the viewers the reality show has.  OUCH.  So does anyone want to take bets for how long until this show is finally pulled from the lineup?
  • Expect to see Jennie Garth from “Beverly Hills 90210″ fame to join “Dancing with the Stars 5″ this fall.  Apparently former co-star Ian Ziering was able to talk her into it.  Also, it’s rumored that Melanie “Scary Spice” Brown will be joining the cast as well.
  • If you were wondering, the contestants on CBS’s “Pirate Master” aren’t responsible for keeping the boat afloat.  Apparently the ship runs with a “ghost crew” that works things behind the scenes.  Of course!  I pretty much figured as much.
  • Frankie Abernathy, a former cast member of MTV’s Real World: San Diego, died over the weekend from cystic fibrosis.  Frankie left the show midseason after much drama that is ever-present on the MTV reality show.
  • Donald Trump apparently hasn’t gotten the hint and is developing another reality show, this time for FOX.  He’s pimping a “Lady or a Tramp” style show where women are sent to “charm school” in order to learn how to be proper ladies.  Riiiiight.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg, ya’ll.  The world is chock full of reality news today.   But that’s the juiciest of the juicy.  Enjoy your Thursday!

Wednesday Reality Roundup

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Oh dear me. This is almost too much reality for one girl to take. We start off, as usual, with “Deadliest Catch”, that most awesome of Discovery Network shows. The weather is wicked being that it is January and this is Alaska. The waves are nuts and the boats are getting knocked around like toys. Makes for some awesome television, let me tell ya. A rogue wave knocks one of the boats and actually busts up the “spooler”. Thank goodness no one was on deck when it happened or everyone would have been in big trouble. At another point in the show, one of the deckhands gets his leg got caught in the line on the trap and if he hadn’t moved so quickly, the guy would have been yanked overboard. Yikes! Meanwhile, things are looking pretty bad for the Northwestern. Just when their luck was looking up and they started raking in some SERIOUSLY full crab pots, the boat starts acting up. Some investigatory work is done and basically, the engine is kaput or trying to become kaput (it all is a bit over my head, actually). The long and short of it is, the Northwestern is hatin’ life. Which is awful cuz I love those guys. Starting next week: we’ll get to watch a miniseries that takes place after the show called “After the Catch” where the nutjob from “Dirty Jobs” interviews the different captains and finds out the behind the scenes scoop. Sweet! Sign me up!

Jordin and BlakeThen, we moved on to “American Idol”. Talk about being down to the wire. After some banter about Paula’s broken nose, we get to the nitty gritty. Blake won the coin toss last episode so he chose to go first. He starts off with his completely awesome rendition of “You Give Love a Bad Name” by Bon Jovi which is even awesomer than the last time. Even Simon is effusive about the performance. Jordin chose to sing “Fighter” by Christina Aquilera and I thought she got a little “screechy” during the middle of the song. Definitely wasn’t her best song. So round one went to Blake, hands down. But the next round, he chose “She Will Be Loved” by Maroon 5 and she chose “A Broken Wing” by Martina McBride, which you’ll remember she rocked rather soundly the first time she sang it. So even though he did a great job with his song, Jordin smoked him during this round. The last round, I thought, was rather unfair. The Idols were told to sing the winner of the songwriter competition’s song, called “This is My Now”. I wouldn’t say it was made for a woman (because it wasn’t), but it was definitely far better suited to Jordin’s style of singing rather than Blake’s. He was frustrated with the song, obviously, but shrugged it off. Jordin did a little better (but I still thought she sounded flat, probably the song’s fault and not hers) and finished off with tears in her eyes, guaranteeing her a healthy chunk of the sympathy vote. Whatever. I so voted for Blake, it’s not even funny. We are treated to Daughtry singing “Home” live on the stage at the end of the show, a very fitting tribute. And I’m still upset that he didn’t win his season. Taylor Hicks is a frickin’ hack. Ahem.

Now, here’s where things got interesting. We had the “Dancing with the Stars” finale and results show (Two hours though? Seriously? What do they think this is, “American Idol”?). But we also had the premiere of “On the Lot” which simply MUST be watched. Praise the heavens for Tivo, is all I can say. “On the Lot” looks like a really promising show. We had the usual reality premiere drudgery, where we’re introduced to a mob of contestants and everything is still rather confusing and disjointed. However, we were introduced to the judges, who are awesome. We have Carrie Fisher, Brent Ratner and Gary Marshall, quite the big-wigs in my opinion. I was impressed. The first task was to take a basic story premise and pitch it as a feature film to the judges. Some people dropped the ball in a rather horrifying manner, while others stepped up and one guy gave such a good pitch that Gary was ready to hire him on to do the flick when he was done. The eliminations were painful, but necessary and fair. Painful only because I know it had to be so disappointing for those who were hoping for more from this experience. The show will be on next on Thursday and we’ll see the contestants’ first big efforts: a 2 1/2 minute short that they had literally NO TIME to put together. As a team. Yeah, should be fun. I know I’ll be tuning in.

Apolo and JulianneOn “Dancing with the Stars”, what else is there to talk about other than who won? I was pleased to see Apolo and Julianne take home the trophy. They deserved it. Laila was a good dancer, but she and Maks lacked the chemistry and all around enjoyment that Apolo and Julianne had. Joey had flair up the ying yang, but he lacked the skills to beat Apolo. Overall, it was a very satisfying end to the show. Just don’t tell that to Laila or Joey. In her words, Laila was pissed to be booted out in third place. And Joey looked very obviously disappointed to come in second. But they had to know the audience loved Apolo. So yay! That’s the sort of reality finale I like to see. However, maybe in the future they can cut it back to one hour tops because two hours for that stuff was TORTURE. They didn’t have near enough content to fill a full two hours and it was awful having to suffer through the drivel to get to the good stuff. Think about that next season, ABC.

“Dancing with the Stars” final performances

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

Apolo and JullianneWell, I went into last night’s show a little nervous. I’ve been rooting for Apolo and Julianne all along and I was afraid they would drop the ball this evening. This is a very important performance, being the last one before the finale tonight and I was worried that either the pressure would get to this energetic duo or that the judges would backlash against them. And after the first round of dances, a “judge’s choice”, it seemed like my fears were well founded.

The judges chose the paso doble for Laila and Maksim and they delivered nearly perfectly and the scores reflected that. For Apolo and Julianne, they chose the rhumba, a dance which has never been their strong suit, and they received scores lower than I would have liked. In the interest of fairness, Joey and Kym danced the cha cha but received an 8 in their scores for not concentrating on the content of the song. It was a fun dance though, Joey sure knows how to deliver the fun. Going into the second round, I was nervous for my favorite pair. I needn’t have been. Laila and Maksim’s freestyle performance fell short of fabulous and they received a rather low score for it. Interestingly enough, Joey and Kym got a fantastic score for their freestyle performance and it was enough to put them into second place on the leaderboard. It was Apolo and Julianne, though, that received the 30 for the evening for their awesome freestyle (set to “Bust a Move” ha!) and catapulted them into first place.

So it turns out the backlash and the dropping of balls was saved for Laila and Maksim instead of Apolo and Julianne. I shouldn’t be pleased by that, but I am. It all rests on the fans. And I do think the fans will turn out for Apolo tonight. I expect he’ll be the one to win this. I imagine Laila will come in second, but I don’t want to discount the Nsync fanbase out there. Joey could pull off second. We’ll find out tonight!

Wednesday Reality Roundup

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

I am back in business, ya’ll! And I couldn’t be happier. I spent all of this afternoon trying to get everything reinstalled and set up the way I like it again. I still have a lot to do, but at least I’m able to post again. The only other computer available to me (when he wasn’t taking it to work with him) was my husband’s laptop and the keyboard on that is WAY too tiny to type on. I’d get through a paragraph only to accidentally select and delete what I’d just written. BAH! Anyhow, I’m happy to report, things will be getting back to normal around here. I’m so sorry for the lack of posts the last several days and thanks so much for being patient!

Deadliest CatchFirstly, we have last night’s “Deadliest Catch” episode. I LOVE the snow crab season. LOVE it. It always seems to be a big ramp up from the king crab season. The weather is nastier, for one thing. We were introduced to a bunch of new greenhorns tonight. Which, correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t you rather be a greenhorn during king crab season than snow crab season? Seriously? Should be interesting to see how they all do. There was also a sequence tonight where someone on another boat got gravely ill and the coast guard had to be called out to rescue him. The guy was literally on his last legs. Lord knows what was wrong with him. But it was intense. We should have some good moments coming up, looks like the weather is going to make things interesting sooner rather than later.

Melinda“American Idol” is really getting down to the wire and I’m a little scared. Because I love everyone who is left and I don’t want to see any of them go. But one of them HAS to go and that really bums me out. Tonight, the first songs were selected by the judges. And the contestants did pretty well with them, but Melinda is the only one to really hit it out of the park. Fair enough. The next songs were selected by the producers and Jordin didn’t do maybe as well, Blake did better and Melinda, yet again, did a fabulous job. Tonight we had THREE songs and the third set were the contestants favorite songs. Aww! Fun! Melinda and Jordin did okay and Blake did a really fantastic job and wowed even Simon. But when it comes down to it, it looks as if the judges favor the women in the final two. Simon especially hopes to see Melinda in the final two, no matter what happens. I hate to think of any of these talented people leaving, but I fear it will be Blake. Which is a shame because he’s a fantastic singer and he takes wonderful risks and really tries to keep himself modern in a competition that will often “age” and make corny your average talent-seeker. But I guess we’ll have to wait for the results show. *bites nails nervously*

Ian and CherylYep, it was as expected. Ian and Cheryl were sent packing tonight and rightly so. I mean, how could they overcome the sheer awesomeness that was the other three dancing teams from Monday night? I mean, COME ON. Though I’m still smarting over Len calling Apolo’s fantastic cha cha “raunchy” because it was probably the single most awesome dance I’ve ever seen on that show. I’m hoping he wins because he’s simply fantastic. But then again, the judges have a thing for Laila. She’s good, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t know. Her partner, Maksim, kinda bugs me. I think he’s sort of a jerk. So if I had to predict, I’d say it’ll be Apolo for the win. But then again, I’ve been saying that for weeks now so this should be no surprise to you. I was not sad to Ian go, but I will be sad next week. I feel it might be Joey going home (as it should) and that sorta makes me sad because he’s so much fun to watch. But we are getting down to the wire and it’s time to get serious. Dangit.

So yay! I’m back in business! I’m so happy to have my laptop back, I could spit.

Wednesday Reality Roundup

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

Yep, it’s that time again! God, I love Tuesday night’s. It’s like sin dipped in chocolate and wrapped in whipped cream, isn’t it? So let’s get started with “Deadliest Catch” because it just very well might be my favorite thing about Tuesday nights. Last night was the end of the king crab season, with all the crews racing to the “finish line”. And for a good while, it looked like Blake, the newbie captain of the Maverick, would be taking home the captain’s wager. The Maverick was raking in the crab and even had to toss back about 5 thousand crab in order to not come in over quota. Of course, when the crab was tallied up at the end of the line, Blake found out that he was off his count by about, oh, 5 thousand. OUCH. The Northwestern, Farwest Leader and Wizard all brought in the big bucks, with each crew member earning over $35,000 for a few days of amazingly difficult and dangerous work. But what excited me the most? Next week we see the beginning of the snow crab season. The crews head back out in January (as opposed to November during the king crab season) and the weather is, shall you say, a bit more interesting. I love snow crab season. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

BlakeOn “American Idol”, we had “disco night” courtesy of the Bee Gee’s and Barry Gibb in particular. And was I the only one who was surprised at how much Barry Gibb sounded exactly like Sean Connery when he spoke? That distracted me all episode long. Anyhow, many of the idols chose Bee Gee’s songs even though Bee Gee’s songs should be sung only by Bee Gee’s. And judges realized this when their ears were assaulted not once, but twice by each of the contestants. Not all the songs were Bee Gee’s however. But I’m still smarting from LaKisha’s unfortunate rendition of “Stayin’ Alive”. And that is just a crime against nature. A lot of our favorites did not have good night’s last night. Melinda didn’t have a very good night. LaKisha had a horrible night. Even dear, dear Blake didn’t impress anyone with his beatboxed disco classics. Though I had to give him props for taking another chance. I did find myself agreeing with Randy when he told Blake that he didn’t have to beatbox EVERY song. You know, feel free to switch it up some. Gah. But he did pretty well with the material he had. Jordin scored the only high praise of the evening. And it was high praise indeed. Barry Gibb himself said that her rendition of “To Love Somebody” is the best version of the song he’s ever heard sung and he’s heard hundreds of artists sing it. The judges practically fell all over themselves with the raves on her performance. Unfortunately her second song of the evening wasn’t as fantastic, but we forgive her for the first song was loverly. Now, who will be going home? I want to say it’s going to be LaKisha. A lot of people feel like Blake is in the hot seat and I really hope he is not. I honestly feel it is LaKisha’s time to go home.

Joey and KymThen, on “Dancing with the Stars”, everyone’s fondest wish was granted when Billy Ray was FINALLY sent packing. But first, we had to endure some nailbiting as Joey was in the bottom two with him. Joey, honestly? Not Ian? That didn’t make any sense to me. And, yet again, we had to endure an entire hour of fluff to get to the meat of the show. I’m starting to get really annoyed with this overblown results shows. I have half a mind to only tune into the last ten minutes and call it good. But at any rate, Billy Ray is gone and we don’t have to watch him slack his way through any more dances. Praise the Lord! We don’t have to hear him complain about having to learn new steps either. Double Bonus! I’m really scared for Joey though. I hope last night served as a wakeup call and the fans will be calling in for him in droves next week. I’d sure hate for him to leave before Ian, who I feel is the next who should go.

Until next Wednesday… keep it real. (geddit? ha!)

Billy Ray fumbles “Dancing with the Stars”

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

Billy Ray CyrusSo it was an interesting show last night. Apolo was fantastic as usual and despite Samantha flubbing the scores, requiring a quick commercial break to sort things out, his evening went more than smoothly as the judges made it clear he’s the clear favorite in this competition. Laila and Joey were both very good last night as well. They got good scores for good dancing and Joey is just as charismatic as usual, in case you were wondering. Ian danced better than his scores would lead you to believe, but even he could not out-bad Billy Ray Cyrus. Folks, he stunk up the joint. And I’m surprised it didn’t come to fisticuffs with Bruno after Bruno called his routine “crap”. Which, come on, it was. The man needs to go home. I’m sure he’s got some very loyal fans out there and that’s to be commended and all. But the time to stroke his ego is over and he needs to be going home tonight.

To put it in perspective, Apolo and Julianne earned an overall score of 58 for their tango and paso doble. Billy Ray and Karina got a pathetic combined score of 38 for their foxtrot and mambo. Gah! That’s a twenty point difference, which happens to be number of points Billy Ray got for his mambo, his highest score of the night. Jeezum crow. If he doesn’t go home tonight, I’ll eat my hat. Mark my words, people. I speak the truth.

Wednesday Reality Roundup

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

Oh how I enjoy Tuesday night’s in Reality Land. They always seem to catch me by surprise too. I’ll be minding my own business, watching the evening news and our lovely satellite DVR will automatically switch over to “Deadliest Catch” at 6pm (gotta love the west coast). And last night was good, too. But heck, this is “Deadliest Catch”, it’s always good. Some of the boats had some rough luck last night, poor guys. Others seemed to be raking in the crab. I couldn’t help but root for the Maverick and it’s “newbie” skipper. I want him to do well on his first time out as a captain. Looks like we’re coming to the end, of king crab season at least. I wonder if they’ll do like last year and extend the show into snow crab season? Because as I recall, that’s when things got a little intense. If you still aren’t watching this show, even after my repeated urgings, then I have nothing to say to you. Nyah.

Jon Bon JoviIt was “rock week” on “American Idol” last night, headed by the fabulous Jon Bon Jovi. All the contestants had to sing Bon Jovi songs and I couldn’t have been happier. Of course, I wasn’t so happy when I heard what Chris Richardson did to “Wanted Dead or Alive”. I’m embarrassed that this guy is from San Jose, my hometown. Please tell me he’s leaving this week? I didn’t enjoy LaKisha too much this week either. She tended to yell her song and her outfit was especially distracting. But I enjoyed her “spicier” attitude and the kiss with Simon was TV gold. So I’ll forgive her. Jordin just needs to not ever do that to her hair ever, ever again. It was NOT her week. No, the best singers of the night were Blake, who with hair dyed black, sang a completely different and awesome rendition of “You Give Love a Bad Name”. I didn’t think that was a song you could beatbox, but apparently if you’re Blake it is. He rocked it and then some. And of course, Melinda was the bomb. I was half expecting her to end up like LaKisha but she really knocked it out of the park. She sang “Have a Nice Day” and she seriously ROCKED. I was very impressed with her performance. She and Blake are the clear front runners to me. I’m sure Jordin is up there too, but Blake and Melinda have a very bright future ahead of them, regardless. I thought last night was a great night on “Idol”.

John RatzenbergerI don’t have very long so let me quickly sum up the results for “Dancing with the Stars”: I was wrong. BOO. BOOOOOO!!!! I thought that Billy Ray so should have been the one to go home. Even BILLY RAY thought he should have been the one to go home, judging from the look on his face. Two more dances to learn? That’s got to be hell for him. No, poor Cliff Clavin was sent packing and I am all about BOOOing that. The results show didn’t seem overly padded for a change, and that was nice. It should be like that every week as far as I’m concerned. So yeah, John went home. BOOO!! (I’m still not over it).

Will Billy Ray be sent home?

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

Billy Ray CyrusI wrote up a long, and if I do say so myself, rather brilliant post recapping last night’s “Dancing with the Stars”. It was filled with lots of deep, insightful comments and witty, biting comments. And you know what happened? Just as I was typing the very last sentance of this brilliant recap, my youngest child (a 10 month old baby) banged on the keyboard and amazingly hit a series of keys that entirely deleted all that I had written. (weep) After having a small fit and cursing the 451Press Gods for not upgrading to WordPress 2.1 already (the autosave feature would have certainly saved me), I am back. But am I going to write out another long, brilliant and witty recap? NOPE. I’m suffering from a particularly nasty flu and am laid up and feeling more than a little awful today. I’m amazed I’m even alive this morning, after how I felt last night. So what I’m going to do instead is point you two very good recaps of last night’s show. I’ll give you the short and dirty though: Laila and Joey reign at the top of the leaderboard while Billy Ray did so awfully I’m surprised they didn’t just kick him out after his first dance last night. Now excuse me, I need to lay on the couch and moan for a few hours.

Apolo is the one to beat on “Dancing with the Stars”

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

Apolo and JullianneThe important information first: The lowest score (a 19) went to John Ratzenberger and Edyta Sliwinska who danced the mambo. It’s not that he’s that bad, but he’s not that good either. We’re getting down to the wire here and his performances, no matter how charming, just don’t measure up to Laila, Joey or Apolo. And the judges are letting him know that with his score. It’s either get better or get going. And I’m going to predict that John gets going this week. It’s time.

The best? That’s not so easily answered. Both Apolo Anton Ohno and Julianne Hough (dancing the rumba) and Laila Ali and Maksim Chmerkovskiy (dancing the cha cha) got 28’s. Of the two, I’d have to say that Apolo’s performance was my favorite. I truly think he’s the one to beat in this competition. I think he’s got enough of the audience’s love and talent to take it all the way. Laila is a fantastic dancer, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the contest came down to Joey and Apolo, simply because Joey’s numbers are always fun and he’s quite charming. But Laila does deserve some special recognition because she truly is doing a magnificent job. I just don’t think she’s got as much of the audience vote as she should have.

Unfortunately, Heather didn’t fall again. I’m going to hope against hope that she goes home this week, that the audience will punish her for missing practice, but I’m just not sure and I don’t want to get my hopes up too high. John is a safer bet, but if Heather went home I might start thinking today’s my birthday.
