“Amazing Race”: Episode 9 recap
Monday, January 7th, 2008Oh boy, where were we? Sorry I missed last week, we were out of town and I was expecting to be able to watch the show and recap as usual. But a) we weren’t at my in law’s house when the show was on and b) the internet wasn’t working. Whoops! I hope everyone’s Christmas and New Years were as great as mine were. And now, let’s get back to the show!
To quickly catch you up (beyond this post, of course), last week TK and Rachel came in first and the Goths were eliminated. Sad to see them go, but their names were a pain to spell out every time. We’re getting down to the wire with the show here, which surprises me. Why do these finales always sneak up on me??

Teams are leaving Mombai, India (WHY do they insist on always sending these poor teams to India??) and are heading to Osaka, Japan! Can’t say that I’m sad that I missed a leg that took place in India, since it is almost always incredibly depressing. Anyhow, the teams leave, Nick and Don just behind the hippies. Ron and Chris leave after them and apparently Ron has had further trouble holding his frustration in where it concerns his daughter. Nathan and Jennifer leave and I’m a little sad that they’re still in it, since they are so dysfunctional. Anyhow, that’s it. Four teams left! Meanwhile, teams are scrambling for tickets and hoping to have the earliest flights available. (Meanwhile, I’m being distracted by the school closure/delayed start notices running at the bottom of my TV screen) Anyhow, all teams fly to Osaka, TK and Rachel are unsure if they’re in the lead or dead last. All the other teams are flying and they seem rather stuck so I’d go with dead last.
The second flight with the three teams on it lands first in Osaka and the teams hit the ground running. They find cabs that hopefully know where they’re supposed to be going. Ron and Chris are confident they’ll do well in Japan. Nathan and Jennifer get to the castle they need to search first and marvel at the beauty. They have difficulty finding the clue box, but eventually locate it and now need to take the cab to a train station. There they need to find a guy and ask him for a clue. Just… any guy? Ron and Chris arrive just as they’re leaving and also have difficulty finding hte clue. They get to it before Nick and Don, though. Nathan and Jen arrive and find their clue guy (who happens to be dressed in red and yellow) and find a Roadblock. Jen choses to do the task, which requires her to become a taxi driver. GAH. Hell no. And just after Christina said she wouldn’t want to drive in Osaka. And, sadly enough, Christina chooses to do the task and is horrified to find out what she has to do. Jen has difficulty deciphering where to take her couple, while Chris has difficulty figuring out how to drive the car. OY! Nick and Don arrive at the station and Nick choses to do the task. He accepts with gusto and also needs help finding out how to read his address. Back at the station, Don and Ron share snacks while waiting. Each driver has a strategy for finding their way to the post office, but ultimately Jen gets there first. She’s thrilled, now let’s see if she can get back again. Christina arrives next, followed by Nick. Jen makes it back first, and now they must take a taxi to a Buddhist temple and find their next clue. Christina meets up with her dad and they take off. Nick, sadly, is lost.
Nick? Still lost. TK and Rachel finally land and get going. Christina and Ron are concerned by their taxi driver’s health. Jen and Nathan take a moment to argue. They arrive at the temple and have a Detour: Sense of Touch or Sense of Smell. It’s either robot soccer or identifying a real flower amidst thousands of fakes. Nate and Jen and Ron and Chris go for the flower task (ugh!). Nick finally makes his way back to Don and they head to the temple at last. They get their clue and chose the robot soccer. Don isn’t wild about it, but Nick is enthusiastic. Nate and Jen bicker, Ron and Chris sniff. Nick and Don make one goal… score! TK and Rachel are still journeying to their first clue. Nate and Jen find their real flower and hurry to the pit stop which is at Tempozan Park. They want to finish in first place badly, as they haven’t yet. Nate and Jen have difficulty finding a cab that knows where to go. Ron and Chris finish as well and easily find a cab that knows where to go. Nate and Jen are frustrated.
Nate and Jen still search for a cab and Nate pushes Jen into a cab out of frustration. Oy. Ron and Chris, meanwhile, are getting along famously. He hasn’t lost his temper all day. Don makes his goal and he and Nick advance to the pitstop. Ron and Chris make it to the mat first and win a pair of electric cars! Wow! They are so happy to be in first place. It’s so cute to see them together and happy. Nate and Jen arrive in second place and are disappointed. But happy that they made it, if nothing else. At least Jen seems to understand that in order to come in first, they need to stop bickering. Nick and Don arrive shortly after and are happy to be still in the game. TK and Rachel, meanwhile, are WAY behind. We see footage of them completing the various tasks and finally making it to the pitstop. They are certain they are out of the game. HOWEVER! Non-elimination leg! Of course, they are considerably behind the other teams and with the speed bump in the next leg, they’re in a bad spot. I hope they can rebound (and get a handy “bunching” of some sort). So until next week…

This week we’re departing from Bingo in Burkino Faso. Where will we visit tonight? Azaria and Hendekea leave first and must go to a nearby village to find the chief and get their next clue (and a welcome gift). The gift is… a chicken. Their gift is placed in a bag and then they get their clue. Must take a taxi nearly 100 miles to another town where they search for the next clue. Oh, and they need to have the chicken with them all day. Fun! So chances are, we’re staying in Burkino Faso, sounds like. It would be weird to have to drag a chicken around everywhere. Nathan and Jennifer usurp Azaria and Hendekea while she’s in the bathroom. They find the Detour! Shake Your Pan or Shake Your Booty. One is physical in nature, the other a little more creative. Nathan and Jennifer are first up for Shake Your Booty and the judges were not impressed. They weren’t creative so they get a 10 minute penalty. Ouchies! Nicolas and Donald choose Shake Your Pan wile A&H take their hand at dancing. And they do a lot better than Nathan and Jennifer. The judges like it and they get their next clue. Now they need to go back into the village and find a market. There is also a U-Turn at the end of the Detour. If they choose to use it (and can only use it once), they can make someone of their choosing go do the other side of the Detour. A&H pass it up. They go to ANOTHER market back in the city they originally flew into. Whew!

“Big Brother 8″s Eric and Jessica are still together, according to
Yep, you heard me right. I’m liveblogging the “Amazing Race: All Stars” finale. Woot! I know I may be three hours behind to some of you, but that’s living in the Pacific time zone for you. It’s new to me, that’s what matters.
Well, this is what I was afraid of. Oswald and Danny couldn’t struggle out of last place last night. I think that even if they had come in second, their “Marked for Elimination” would have seen them gone. I sort of enjoyed them after all. A heck of a lot more than Charla and Mirna or Eric and Danielle. And now, those two cursed teams will be racing for the million. See that? I just got a shiver of dread down my back. Dear God, if the BQ’s don’t win, I may have to throw in the towel on this one.
I’ll admit, I didn’t watch all of “American Idol” last night. For pity’s sake, it was two hours long! Yes, it was for charity though and a very, very worthy charity. But I have a husband who is charmed by improv comedy and he wanted to watch “Thank God You’re Here” over on NBC. Good enough. I did tune into the last hour though. And it was good. There were some great performances though I will admit that I rolled my eyes at the whole Celine Dion/Elvis thing. Puhlease. Been there, done that.
Is it over yet? Nope, not by a long shot. God, I miss Rob and Amber. This week, I continue to want to brutalize Mirna. My feelings are not unusual, people. My husband just last night said, (and I quote) “I just want to bash her face in.” My 70+ year old mother has a strong, STRONG dislike for her. NO ONE likes this woman. Which gets you thinking, how must it be to know that a majority of the world really doesn’t like you? That’d be rough. Doesn’t seem to make her want to start acting any more decently though. UGH. WHY is she and Charla racing so well?? I want them GONE. Bah. Charla, to set the record straight, is a perfectly fine human being. I have no issue with Charla. It’s MIRNA who is the DEVIL.
So what happened on “Amazing Race: All Stars” last night? Not really anything at all. You’d think being down at the Final Four, mere days from the finish of the race there would be plenty happening. But not so much. The most interesting news is that the teams traveled to Honk Kong, China and the tasks they needed to complete there were appropriately awesome. Danny and Oswald snagged the fast forward by riding in a stunt car that raced around before purposefully flipping onto it’s side and then righting itself again. It was amazing. So they made it first to the mat, to the surprise of no one. I’m hoping either them or the BQ’s win. Yes, I said the BQ’s. I know, I’m just as surprised as you are. But I lurve Donny and Oswald a wee bit more so they’re my current front-runners. The rest of the teams got to climb bamboo scaffolding, being careful to avoid the flying, fighting ninjas around them. Oh yes, flying fighting ninjas indeed! So that was pretty cool. The next task required running around an abandonned building and kicking in doors. I bet that was great for working out race aggression. Surprisingly, Charla was pretty good at this. As she said, she’s got great strength in her legs and she was proud to be able to showcase that. The BQ’s made it to the mat second and the producers tried their darndest to make it seem like it was neck and neck between Charla and Mirna and Eric and Danielle, but I knew Eric and Danielle were significantly behind. I should have been less surprised that it was a non-elimination leg. After all, the finale episode almost always starts off with four teams and I don’t remember anyone saying last night was going to be the finale. So, whatever. They’re marked for elimination, big deal.
First off, many apologies for the lack of postage on Friday. I was KO’d by an unexpected DSL emergency. Luckily, my modem has been replaced and I’m back in business. Let’s just say that 24+ hours of no internet is nothing short of torture for a geek like me. I hope not to have to suffer such a horror ever, ever again.
